Most Rev. Lucius I. Ugorji

President - CBCN

As the President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria, I am deeply honored to serve the Church in Nigeria alongside my brother bishops. Our mission remains steadfast in spreading the teachings of Christ, promoting justice, peace, and unity, and offering pastoral care to all Catholics. Together, we work toward fostering a vibrant Church that serves both the spiritual and social needs of our people, striving for a better, more compassionate society. We invite all to join us in this journey of faith and service, as we continue to build a stronger, united Church in Nigeria.

May God bless and guide us all!

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) is a collective body of Catholic bishops in Nigeria. It serves as a forum for unity, communication, and collaboration among the bishops, working to promote the teachings of Christ and to guide the spiritual and pastoral care of Catholics across Nigeria.

You can get involved by participating in CBCN’s initiatives, attending events, and supporting the various projects and ministries led by the Conference. Stay updated by visiting our website and following our official channels.

CBCN’s objectives include fostering unity among the Catholic bishops, promoting the teachings of the Church, addressing social issues such as justice and peace, and working for the spiritual, social, and cultural development of the Catholic community in Nigeria.

The CBCN holds plenary sessions twice a year, usually in the first week of Lent and the second week of September, where the bishops gather for prayer, study, and deliberation on key issues concerning the mission of the Church in Nigeria. These sessions help guide the direction of the Church’s pastoral activities and initiatives.

CBCN provides spiritual guidance, advocates for human rights, promotes social justice, and coordinates educational and charitable initiatives through its various agencies. It also works to address the spiritual and material needs of Catholics across Nigeria.

CBCN is led by an executive body consisting of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Assistant Secretary. These principal officers are often elected at a Plenary Meeting of the CBCN with a mandate of a four-year non-renewable tenure. They are to guide and coordinate the activities of the Conference in line with the mission of the Church in Nigeria.
